Problems

  1. In a spreadsheet, create a data set that shows the number of units of 25 types of fruits and vegetables sold by a speciality produce vendor.
    • There should be at least 25 different fruits and vegetables.
    • Unit sales should be listed in the hundreds. In other words, if you sell 500 dragon fruit, your sales would be listed as "5."
    • The table for the data set should be neatly labelled with appropriate titles.
    • You should create two distinctly different types of charts to show the sales of the produce.
  2. A car dealer sells 25 autos in January, 6 in February, 4 in March, 9 in April, 13 in May, 13 in June, 22 in July, 25 in August, 17 in September, 13 in October, 18 in November, and 27 in December.
    • Create a well labelled data table to show this.
    • Using a function, show the yearly sales.
    • If salesmen make a 5% commission on sales, and each car sold for an average of $35,000, create a formula to show how much commission the dealership would pay its salesmen.
    • Using functions, which month had the highest car sales,
      • and which month lowest?
    • Create a pie chart that shows the distribution of sales by month.
  3. At LCS
    • There are three Ks, with a 17, 19, and 19 kids.
    • There are 3 1s, with 20, 21, and 20 kids.
    • There are 3 2s with 23, 22, and 20 kids.
    • There are 3 3s with 22, 23 and 21 kids in each class.
    • There are 3 4s with 22, 23, and 24 kids.
    • One Grade 5 has 22 kids, another 23, and the last 22.
    • There are 4 6s with 22 kids each.
    • There are 3 sevens with 24, 24, and 25 kids.
    • There are 3 8s with 24 kids each.
    • There are 4 9s with 24, 23, 24, and 23 kids.
    • There are 3 10s with 25, 25 and 20 kids.
    • There are 4 11s with 26 kids per class,
    • and 3 12s with 2 classes of 23 and one of 21.
    • Create a data table showing these numbers.
    • What is the total number of students? (Use functions wherever possible.)
    • What is the average class size?
    • What is the smallest class size?
      • and the largest?
    • What is the class mode?
    • Create a chart showing the distribution of students by Grade.
    • With the data you have in hand, you know that Linden has planned to expand the size of classrooms for some grades. Which grades should be priority and why? (And don't say it should be yours because you're more important.)
  4. Students in a course get the following marks
      Assignment 1 Assignment 2 Quiz 1 Quiz 2
    Johnny  3  2  22  6
    Davey  5 8  35  74
    Brady  7  7  40  73
    Sammy  10  10  50  72
    Tony  9  9  49  35
    Billy  8  5  17  68
    Andy  6  7  32  6
    Out of  10  10  50  75

Expand your table as necessary to include columns or rows to show
    • the average for each assignment,
    • and the average for each student assuming
      • the assignments are worth 25% of the mark
      • and the Quizzes are worth 75% of the mark
  5. Use data from the winners of the Boston Marathon and try to determine if there are patterns to
    • speed
    • winning countries over the past 100 or so years.
  6. Based on the data, in what year did Canada (use spreadsheet below for Canada) (or try this Wikipedia page) (for the provinces try this data)
    • have the greatest population growth (in percentage terms)?
    • which province had the greatest population growth (in percentage terms) and in what year?
